TSHWANE METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY Item 7, Part I – Revised Employment Equity Policy
SPEECH BY COUNCILLOR RICHARD DINKELMANN (ACDP)
28 SEPTEMBER 2006
Speaker, thank you.
South Africa comes from an unnatural background, I think we all know
that. And it is true that I grew up in a more privileged way than
most of those members in the ANC Caucus – that's a fact.
We as a party - the ACDP - support the sentiments of Affirmative
Action, and of Black Economic Empowerment to right some of the
injustices that happened in the past. But we also would like to
see an end - a sunset clause, as was mentioned earlier - to these
policies, so that especially the youth do not feel the same
discrimination. I have four children and I'm very grateful that
they all so far are on their way to establishing good careers, but
already one of them has left South Africa. I wouldn't say directly
but possibly, due to some of the reasons mentioned by, Dr Landman.
But I would like to put a challenge to this Council, those on the
privileged side and those on the previously underprivileged
side. Let's take hands, let's build this country, let's help where
help is needed, let's mentor where mentoring is required. We need
all of the skills, we need all of the expertise, to grow the economy,
to create skills and to make South Africa a better place for all.
Thank you Mr Speaker.
