Municipal Manager gets unlimited powers - unwise and dangerous
The ACDP would like to express their disappointment in the conduct of
the ANC during the Council meeting of 31May. Every amendment proposed
by opposition parties has been voted on and defeated by the ANC
majority.
This makes decisions in the interest of good governance impossible. It
appears that we are living in a one party state under the banner of
democracy.
The quality of these high level meetings, has been deterioration during
the past few months. We need to return to respecting opinions and input
from each other instead of dismissing intelligent reasoning and taking
it to a vote.
We are especially concerned that the amendment proposed by the ACDP -
on item 10 - pertaining to limiting delegation of powers to the
Municipal Manager to purchase land & servitudes to R10 million, was
brushed aside by the ANC majority. Giving unlimited powers to any
office is unwise and dangerous, as it could lead to corruption.
The proposal by the ACDP was supported by the DA, FF+, CDP & ACA.
We hope that the ANC will reconsider their style of governance in
favour of what are realistic, sober decisions and in the interest of
all the residents of this beautiful city.
