MEDIA STATEMENT:
ACDP Tshwane: Position on Gauteng Freeway Proposal (Tolling) 22 June 2006
During
the Council Meeting on 22 June, the ACDP expressed its concern about
the proposed tolling of the "Gauteng Freeway Improvement Proposal" as
published by SANRAL - SA National Roads Agency Ltd.
Councillor Richard Dinkelmann, seconded by Councillor Derrick Kissoonduth proposed an amendment to recommendation 5, as follows:
"That Council
expresses its objection to tolling as the preferred funding strategy,
and urges the National and Gauteng departments to find other funding
mechanisms for the proposed amendments"
When the matter came to the vote, only the ANC opposed the proposed amendment.
The ACDP is extremely disappointed by this action of the ANC, as it
would seem to indicate that they have already decided to implement
tolling as the chosen funding option.
