The 2006 Local Government Elections (2006LGE) have come and gone and as it is, not all people involved in the elections were satisfied with the results. Each party wanted more of the voter share. Of no other party can that be said more than of the ACDP. The run-up to the elections contained a lot of excitement which led to a very positive outlook toward the elections on 1 March 2006. It was my first stand as a ward candidate and for the first time I felt that as Christians we could make a very positive difference in South Africa. As the day grew longer I kept visiting each of the voting stations in my ward while also interacting with the other party candidates and their party agents. By the end of the day we were all spent. It was decided that all ACDP candidates would go to their respective zone headquarters to wait for and discuss the results as they came in. After the voting ended at 18:00, and as soon as the counting of the ballots started, I decided to go home for a two hour break. At the zone headquarters we started receiving results from our party agents who were involved in the counting process. When I heard some of the results of my ward I was devastated, to say the least. The results were not as I had hoped! However, with a day or two of rest from all the activities of the elections I sat down with my own personal post mortem of the elections. As a party in Tshwane we did the same in the few weeks to come. The ACDP garnered 2.2% of the vote in the 2000LGE while in the 2006LGE it was only 2.01%. While this seemed like a loss (and rightly so), it was still exciting since ACDP Tshwane regained a seat that was lost during the unethical practice of floor-crossing some time ago. Up until these elections we had only 2 seats in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Council due to the floor-crossing. However, even though we lost 0.09% of the vote it was still enough to have 3 seats in the council. This was immensely positive to us! One thing stood out to us, and that is that the church is not as involved in the affairs of the country as it should be. In a country that claims between 70-80% of Christians, it is amazing how little effect they can have on something like the elections. Voters still vote culturally and not according to the values that truly guide them. This can certainly be said of the Christians of this country! If only the Christians of South Africa could look past their cultural trappings and respond in elections as true heavenly citizens, not bound by culture, but endeavouring to have a government truly filled with Godly people wanting the very best for South Africa as a nation! The General Elections of 2009 are up next and we do not have a lot of time to educate people on the values of the ACDP. It is now the time to create a paradigm shift in the minds of Christians and to bring about a Biblical Worldview reformation in the hearts and minds of the people of South Africa! It is now the time to show your alliance with the ACDP by becoming a member and to work toward a South Africa led by Godly people! Simply sign up as a member here or email us!
